Putting Health Systems First

Aegis Ventures's Model for Collaborative Healthcare Innovation

The Mission

At Aegis, we're on a mission to cultivate enduring partnerships with healthcare organizations to build healthtech solutions that solve healthcare’s most pressing problems.

We merge the agility, speed, and resourcing of a venture studio with the deep clinical insight, diverse data, and administrative expertise of America’s leading health systems. We’re committed to empowering health systems to transform how they operate and deliver care, leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence to help them architect the next generation of digital health transformation.

We work shoulder-to-shoulder with health system partners to co-design technology solutions that meet the needs of their patients and caregivers.

Our model helps health systems achieve their core clinical and administrative objectives while ensuring they capture the financial upside commensurate with their contributions in driving technology adoption.

Over the last three years, we’ve honed our collaborative model with Northwell Health, New York’s largest health system. From ideation to implementation and spin-out, we have built a playbook for co-creating new ventures with health system partners.

Our model has produced five jointly-developed digital health ventures. We’ve gained valuable insights partnering with Northwell; however, the journey to revolutionize healthcare is far from over. To broaden our impact, we're launching the Digital Consortium—an assembly of leading regional health systems aimed at collectively creating and scaling healthtech solutions. All Digital Consortium members will work together as equal partners in transforming healthcare, ensuring our innovations are built by and for health systems.

Healthcare Challenges: Navigating an Existential Crisis

Despite rapid technological advancements, health systems have struggled to translate technology’s promise into tangible improvements for patients and providers.

In the last 36 months, more than $80 billion of investments have poured into 13,000 digital health start-ups.1

These solutions have addressed only a narrow segment of health systems’ challenges.

Many of these startups also compete directly to serve patients and further fragment care delivery, without the quality of clinical care that health systems bring. Their competition further challenges health systems that are concurrently addressing financial and workforce problems.

The most recent waves of health tech innovation have left many health systems feeling marginalized by the tech and venture communities, which have overlooked the specialized needs and complexities of healthcare organizations.

At the same time, many leading regional health systems have also realized that their challenges are largely shared and their biggest competitors are not each other, but the scaled national players seeking to take their business. This has opened new and promising avenues for collaboration.

Foundation for Success

Over the last three years, we have partnered with Northwell Health to build five companies spanning patient engagement, emotion analytics, AI-enabled diagnostics, clinical risk stratification, and women’s health.

Through our partnership with Northwell Health, we have sought to apply everything we learned to the systematic development of an ecosystem of digital health companies. At a time when so many technologists seek to disrupt healthcare, we believe that successful partnerships begin by recognizing what health systems have achieved, and how their approaches may be developed further to assist care delivery. Aligned incentives are critical to adoption. Health systems aren't simply users; they are our closest partners, co-developers, and investors.

Through a network of integrated digital health companies with shared infrastructure and a common vision for success, we have advanced five key business outcomes for Northwell. These outcomes can be viewed as a window into the potential benefits for other health systems, providing key insights and paving the way for broader applications in the field.

01. Expanding Patient Access and Improving Patient Engagement

02. Closing Care Gaps

03. Increasing Equity

04. Strengthening the Workforce

05. Lowering Costs and Increasing Revenue

Introducing the Digital Consortium, Our Vision

Healthcare is about people caring for people, and it’s built on trust. By relying on health systems’ expertise, we can build and validate new ventures faster than typical health tech start-ups. Trust underpins our partnerships. At a time of seismic change across the health tech landscape, we're now poised to expand this partnership model to additional healthcare systems, catalyzing innovation across the nation.

Chaired by Dr. John Noseworthy, the Digital Consortium will convene a set of leading health systems to collectively address healthcare’s most pressing quality, equity, and cost problems.

Health systems will be co-developers, channel partners, and co-investors for the solutions we develop, with an eye toward scaled endeavors that enable their systems to generate new sources of revenue diversification and margin expansion.

The Digital Consortium is a monumental stride towards harnessing health systems’ collective expertise to foster groundbreaking solutions, redefining healthcare delivery for the better.

Our founding Digital Consortium health system partners will enjoy an array of benefits. They will gain first access to investment and co-development opportunities within our pipeline, providing the option to have a seat at the table and early-stage ownership in a broad portfolio of integrated health tech companies.

Digital Consortium members will receive tailored support for digital transformation, including options to form new or expand existing companies, while also gaining access to a network of health system executives for collaborative learning and shared insights on digital advancements.
